At Youth Birsa, our mission is to deliver accurate, fair, and impactful journalism to our diverse readership. As a daily bilingual newspaper, we are committed to serving the public interest by upholding the highest ethical standards of journalism. This Editorial Policy outlines the principles that guide our newsroom, our reporters, and our editors every day.
1. Accuracy and Fact-Checking
- Verification First: We strive to report the facts accurately. Our editorial team rigorously verifies all information, cross-checking sources and official documents before publication.
- Context Matters: We believe that facts alone are not enough; we commit to providing the necessary context to help our readers fully understand the social, political, and economic impact of the news.
- Bilingual Integrity: Because we publish in multiple languages, we ensure that translations maintain the exact factual accuracy, tone, and integrity of the original reporting.
2. Fairness, Balance, and Independence
- Multi-Sided Reporting: We aim to represent diverse viewpoints, especially on controversial or complex community issues. We make every reasonable effort to reach out to all relevant parties for their comments or responses before a story goes to print or online.
- Independence: Youth Birsa is editorially independent. Our reporting is not influenced by political parties, corporate advertisers, special interest groups, or personal biases. Our duty is strictly to the truth and to our readers.
- Separation of News and Opinion: We maintain a strict boundary between objective news reporting and opinion pieces. Columns, editorials, and op-eds will always be clearly labeled as “Opinion,” “Editorial,” or “Analysis” to ensure transparency.
3. Sourcing and Confidentiality
- Identified Sources: We prefer to name our sources to build trust and accountability.
- Anonymous Sources: The use of anonymous sources is a rare exception, reserved only for situations where the information is of vital public interest and the source faces genuine professional, personal, or legal retaliation. In such cases, the identity of the source must be known and vetted by the editing team.
- Plagiarism: Youth Birsa has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. All information, quotes, or media gathered from other publications or agencies must be properly attributed.
4. Corrections and Clarifications
- Commitment to Truth: We are human, and when errors occur, we acknowledge them promptly and transparently.
- Process for Corrections: If a factual error is discovered in a published article, we will correct it immediately online with a clear note explaining what was changed and why. For print editions, clarifications or corrections will be published in the subsequent issue in a designated section.
- Reporting an Error: Readers who spot inaccuracies are encouraged to contact our editorial board directly at our official email with the subject line “Correction Request.”
5. Social Responsibility and Community Ethics
- Minimizing Harm: While we are fearless in pursuing the truth, we handle sensitive topics—such as crime, personal tragedies, and vulnerable communities—with empathy and respect.
- Protecting Identities: We strictly adhere to legal guidelines and ethical standards regarding the privacy of individuals, particularly minors and survivors of sensitive crimes, ensuring their identities are never compromised.
- Hate Speech and Sensitivity: We do not publish content that incites violence, promotes discrimination, or uses derogatory language against any community, religion, gender, or caste.
6. User-Generated Content and Comments
- Constructive Dialogue: We welcome vibrant community discussion on our digital platforms. However, we reserve the right to moderate or remove comments that contain hate speech, defamation, personal attacks, or commercial spam.
